In Oaxaca . at least eight people have died from drowning on different beaches, as a result of the strong waves that have been registered on the coasts of the state for several weeks.

In most cases, the swells have washed away bathers, who, due to the force of the sea, cannot get out and lose their lives.

“We have approximately eight people who have died so far in 2021, two in the Huatulco area, two in the Zipolite area, two more in the San Agustinillo area, recently and finally two more in the Puerto Escondido area ... 50% or more than 50% of these drownings have been due to recklessness, ”said Esteban Vázquez, Civil Protection delegate on the Oaxaca coast.

For several weeks, the swell phenomenon has been present constantly along the coastal coast of Oaxaca, causing high waves, swells and drag currents.

“Puerto Escondido quite well, I mean, the swell is quite strong, the truth is, and it is not suitable right now to put the little ones, in fact, I bring a five-year-old and we are just making him walk on the shore Right? ”, Explained Teresa Rivera, a resident of the place.

Victims have ignored red flag signs

According to the authorities, in most of the accidents, the victims have ignored the red flag signs and go into the sea.

As a result of these deaths, the lifeguard corps have intensified their surveillance tours, to prevent more fatal incidents from occurring on the beaches of Oaxaca.

“So, we have been giving all these preventions, but hey, there we lose visibility, we cannot give this prevention, and that's what happens, right? where there are no lifeguard booths, it is a little risky to be entering, to be entering the sea, ”said Godofredo Vázquez, coordinator of the Puerto Escondido Lifeguard Corps.

So far this year, lifeguards in Puerto Escondido and other destinations on the Oaxaca Coast have carried out at least 10 rescues, in which they have saved tourists who were washed away from drowning.
