“ Help me figure out Huatulco ”
I'm trying to get my head around this place. We are looking for a smallish accommodation near the beach and a town. We like to eat at local places and just chill out on a beach. We do not want a large AI type place. I've been reading about Huatulco and I've figured out that there are many masterplanned areas. Are there any accommodation that would be not masterplanned? We have an international flight out of Huatulco and want to spend 5 days in a quieter village on the water. Any suggestions??? I would really appreciate any help. I'm leaving in 3 weeks and my planning is a bust this time.
Thanks for any leads.

Hey GP....firstly you will love the Huatulco area...
you do not want to go to Tangolunda Bay as that is where most of the all inclusive hotels are.
The small towns of Santa Cruz and La Crucecita are about 5 or so km away and have that great mexican ambiance...great food and people.
Lots of different beaches too and since you are there for 5 days I would suggest a different beach for almost every day. Cabs are cheap and the beaches have great retaurants and the best food.....
Try Maguey beach for great swimming and lots of food options
Playa Entrega is wonderfullly local and has good snorkelling....eateries too
Bocana is a great surf beach with the crashing waves that can lull you to sleep...gorgeous
Chahue is nice too, with a couple of beach clubs that you can hang at.
you are visiting at a quiet time and not many tourists. We liked Castillo hotel for it's great mexican vibe, located in Santa cruz. I have heard great things about Mision de los Arcos, located right in the main square of Crucecita...wonderful location with restaurants a plenty to choose from--we are looking at that hotel for our winter holiday this year. Like i said before, cabs are cheap so getting to the beaches will be no problem.
Hopefully some of the locals will respond to your request....they have the best ideas of all!!

Huatulco IS a Fonatur development - the whole area. 20 years ago there was nothing here but a small fishing village where Santa Cruz is. They are developing the 9 bays and +/- 36 beaches primarily for tourism, you'll find everything from big AI resorts to small posadas.
If you truly want a 'Mexican' beach town experience I would suggest checking out Puerto Angel, Zipolite or Mazunte just up the coast. They were however, quite badly affected a couple of weeks ago by Hurricane Carlotta, so it may not be the easiest time to visit those areas.

Air Canada Vacations are flying out of Toronto with direct fights Saturdays to Huatulco, Dec 22 to April 06. Hotel package or flight only. You can also search from other airports across Canada using this route via Toronto, they match up the flights not too bad.
Have a nice trip, Anne & Terry.
Awesome! The more options for getting to Huatulco the better.
What are the prices like? Flying out of Canada is always so expensive. Huatulco Hotels | Huatulco Villas | Huatulco Vacation Blog
Website says the prices are in Canadian dollars.

That's good see, but out of Winnipeg you have to go throughToronto. They do not show any direct flights to Huatulco. But that might change later into the year I guess we will have to wait and see what our options are.

And once again, nothing for Winnipeg from Transat! Come on airlines.... we love Huatulco!

Looks like Westjet is your last hope for a direct non-stop alternative to Sunwing for departures out of YWG at this point.......Westjet did announce they were expanding their operations to Mexico with four new flights from Canada.......With Air Canada in the east and Air Transat in the west, perhaps Winnipeg, Regina, and Saskatoon will see Westjet offer direct flights to HUX next season........
If not, you're left with Sunwing, or the... "planes, trains, and automobiles" option through the Excited States.....

no Transat from Vancouver....
Sunwing only....
but, if I am desperate I could fly down with a cheap package from sunwing , stay a little longer and return via Air Canada through toronto....only one stop is nice but ten hours in the air is nasty...... one way air only price right now 1381 all included hux to yvr...ouch
and no Suze, not booking yet :)

Ha ha... let me know your dates of travel... I'm always up for a challenge, just ask Zack aka itszando on the Airfare to Huatulco recent post.
It's great to finally see an alternative carrier for the Eastern Canadian Folks. At this point in time I'm soooo done, kaput, fini on Westjet - offering anything, at least for the upcoming season. With their recent code share partnering with AA, more destinations in Mexico are available, still no Huatulco. Their flights to Zihua look pretty enticing tho'.
