A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

My Life in México

by Rollins (Rolly) Brook

This is a picture story of my retirement life in Lerdo, Durango.
This website is mostly photo essays of typical daily life in a town far off the tourist path.  It is not "my vacation in México."  It's a slice of real Mexican life.  I hope you will find it interesting and entertaining.
Start here with a short guided tour.

A bridge on the Oaxaca-Coast highway
Two ambitious highway projects in the state of Oaxaca — linking the capital city to the coast and to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec — are only a few months behind schedule, officials said after their progress was reviewed in a meeting between transport officials, the contractor ICA and Gov. Gabino Cué. FULL STORY

Me and Leyla enjoying the sunset spot

Yeah, It's nice, I thought. The beach is beautiful and there are a few restaurants but it didn't seem like there was anything particularly special. I arrived in low season and while the yoga school was holding a silent retreat so it turned out that a lot of things were shut.

Still, it isn't about the restaurants being open that makes this place special, perhaps it's the fact that if you look one way you can see the sunrise and the other you can see the sun set.

Waves crashing against the rocks

Anyway, the best spot for this by far is up the hill at Punta Cometa, a nature reserve at the end of Rincon Sito beach. You can pay a visit any time of the day and it is beautiful, the trails are simple but delightful and the views stunning. Sunset is definitely the most popular time of day though and from here you get the most sublime spot to see the golden orb disappearing into the sea.

Sunset

I went a few times during my yoga Teacher Training Course and it was always beautiful but it was when I went with Leyla just a day before she was due to head back to Mexico City, DF, that it was the most beautiful moment. We sat in silence watching the sun disappearing, not knowing whether we would see each other again or what would happen. Suddenly we looked at each other and smiled, and laughed. We had both had a feeling of calmness and understanding dawn on us while observing the sunset. It was a really powerful moment for both of us and something which made me realise Mazunte, and Punte Cometa in particular, are very special places.

From here the sea crashes against the rocks beneath you. You can climb down to Mermejita beach from here or down the rocks to the "natural jacuzzi" trapped in amongst the rocks. Or if you are feeling particularly adventurous you can even venture to the end of the rocks to the promintory that stretches out to the bay.
