A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Getting around
There are three ways to get here from Puerto Escondido airport.
The first one is to take a cab from the airport that one costs around $1000 pesos.
The second one is to walk outside the airport and take a taxi all the way to Zipolite that should cost around $500 pesos.
The last one is to walk outside the airport, take a taxi and ask the taxi driver to take you to "las suburbans hacia Pochutla" the Suburban cost $60 pesos, and you will ask the Suburban driver to leave you in "crucero the Pochutla" and from there you will take an other a taxi to Zipolite (blue or purple), It can be a private one $150 pesos or colectivo $20 pesos. I suggest the colectivo since is the same taxi you just have to tell him "colectivo" and he will decide if he wants to take you or not, ( allmost all taxi drivers says yes).
Good luck!!
Other things to note
This is the perfect place to relax and do nothing, but if you feel energetic there are many things to do and places to visit around here. There are many really good yoga instructors teaching in beautiful places, surf lessons and scenic boat tours. There are two lovely towns San Agustinillo (10 minutes away in colectivo) and Mazunte (15minutes away in colectivo) and here you could see the National Turtle Museum and visit Punta Cometa were you can see the sunset like nothing you have ever seen. There is also the beach of Ventanilla (20 minutes away in colectivo) wich is a beautiful natural reserve were you can enjoy the beach, but also the tour of the lagoon were you'll see exotic birds and crocodiles!
