A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Hello Everybody:

Lots of Banks with ATMs around The Zocalo.
With the peso at a low place it is hard to not find food at good value.

Eatery near zocalo: Cafe El Popular on Cinco de Mayo one block from zocalo. It actually is popular.
Getting to Zipolite: second class bus from Huatulco to Pochutla, then cab to Zipolite. You have to do this because the bus keeps going straight towards Puerto Escondido and Zipolite is down the hill near Puerto Angel on the coast.

In fact, Cafe El Popular is so popular that once we had to wait for a bit outside it. The food is not the best you'll ever have in Mexico, but it is fun and cheap and OK food and well located for the tourist sights.

La Terraza del Conquistador on the roof of the Gran Hotel at the Zocalo has very good Mexican food.

Check airline fares as they are going to be close to the same price as the bus (maybe a bit more) without the massive travel time.

Zipolite - I want to further clarify what Northword said in post number two. I assume you are flying from Mexico City to Huatulco. If this is the case just walk out of the airport there out to the main highway... you will not cross the high way but wait on the sidewalk to the right as you hit the big road (3 minute walk)... then the bus he mentions only runs once an hour and as I recall is about 13 peso... but much more frequent are the white minivans with colorful paintings on the side that say POCHUTLA in the window... those are the ones you want... they run about every 15 minutes.. Cost is 20 pesos for sure to the "Cruzero por Puerto Angel" Its the only traffic light heading north and a big busy intersection,... about 45 minutes depending on how many stops the van makes along the way... then cross the street diagonally so you are standing on the road that the sign points to Puerto Angel. Pick up trucks will come with Zipolite in the window... they are 7 peso to Zipolite (the last stop)... or you can take a Puerto Angel truck for 7 peso and then get a taxi from there to Zipolite for another 8 pesos... this assumes you are not arriving on the 6pm flight... then prices might be more because the pick ups are not running and taxis charge more... but still would be cheap... the night time fare is 50 pesos from Puerto Angel to zipolite in a private taxi instead of a collectivo taxi... I will see you there on April 1!
